🧠 How to play Simon Says (color memory)
By Miguel Arechaga
Simon Says is a memory game with more than forty years of history. Repeating color sequences that get longer and longer seems easy at first, but it soon becomes a real test for your short-term memory. Here's how to go further.
What is Simon Says?
The game lights up a sequence of colors that you must repeat in the same order. Each correct answer adds one more color, extending the chain. The goal is to survive as many rounds as possible.
How to play
- Press Start: the game will light up a color.
- Once it finishes, repeat the sequence by pressing the colors in the same order.
- Get it right and one more color is added, growing the chain.
- A single mistake ends the game. Your best round is saved automatically.
Techniques to remember long sequences
The experts' trick is to not memorize individual colors, but to group them. Instead of "green, green, red, blue," remember "double green + red-blue." The brain retains blocks of two or three far better than individual items; it's the same technique we use to remember phone numbers.
It also helps to give each color a sound or word. Our version plays a different tone per color: lean on the melody, because auditory memory reinforces visual memory. Repeating the sequence under your breath as it lights up locks in the memory better.
Quick tips
- Keep your gaze relaxed on the center to take in all four colors at once.
- Don't rush when repeating: haste causes almost every mistake.
- If you lose count, focus only on the last color added; you already know the rest.
Simon Says is a gym for your working memory. With these grouping techniques you'll go from 5 or 6 rounds to breaking 10 without effort.
🏆 Streak ranking
Simon Says has its own global ranking: the longest sequence you manage to repeat is saved. Go to Ranking, the 🕹️ 1 Player tab, choose "Simon Says" from the dropdown, and compare your score with other players, synced to your account. For your result to count you need a free account on MundoSudoku (just a username and password, no email required): you can play without one, but without logging in your score won't be saved to the ranking.
