🀄 How to play Mahjong Solitaire
By Miguel Arechaga
Mahjong Solitaire is one of the most relaxing and addictive matching games out there. Although it shares tiles with classic four-player mahjong, here you play alone against the board: the challenge is to clear every tile by pairing them up. Here we explain the rules and how to avoid getting stuck.
What is Mahjong Solitaire?
Unlike traditional mahjong (a four-player game similar to dominoes), Mahjong Solitaire is a solo pastime. The tiles are stacked into a shape, and your goal is to clear them all by matching identical tiles that are free.
What a free tile is and how to play
- A tile is free if it has no other tile on top of it and also has its left or right side clear.
- Select two matching free tiles to remove them from the board.
- Removing tiles frees up the ones that were underneath or beside them: that's how you open up the board.
- You win when no tiles are left.
- If you get stuck, use Hint to see an available pair, or Shuffle to rearrange the remaining tiles.
Mahjong tricks and strategy
- Clear tiles from the top layers and the edges first: they free up more pieces.
- Before matching a tile, check whether it's blocking another important one underneath.
- If you see four matching tiles, think about which two you should pair up so you don't trap the other two.
- Don't rush: a few seconds of planning prevents dead ends.
Why it's so addictive
Mahjong Solitaire combines visual recognition, planning and an unhurried pace that makes it perfect for unwinding. It's a gentle exercise in focus and visual memory, ideal for short breaks.
🏆 Time ranking
Mahjong has its own global ranking: your best time clearing all the tiles is saved. Go to Ranking, the 🕹️ 1 Player tab, choose "Mahjong" from the dropdown, and compare your score with other players, synced to your account. For your result to count you need a free account on MundoSudoku (just a username and password, no email required): you can play without one, but without logging in your score won't be saved to the ranking.
