🔢 How to play 2048 (guide and tips)

2048 is one of those deceptively simple games: you control it with four directions and a single rule, yet it hides a surprisingly deep strategy. In this guide we explain how it works, how to reach the legendary 2048 tile, and which habits hold you back without you realizing it.
What is 2048?
2048 is a number puzzle played on a 4x4 grid. Each tile shows a power of two (2, 4, 8, 16...) and the goal is to combine them until you form the 2048 tile. You can keep playing afterward to beat your high score.
How to play 2048 step by step
- Slide all the tiles at once with the arrow keys (↑ ↓ ← →) or by swiping on mobile.
- When two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into one that adds both: 2 + 2 = 4, 4 + 4 = 8, and so on.
- After each move a new tile appears (almost always a 2, sometimes a 4) in a random empty spot.
- The goal is to reach the 2048 tile, but you can keep going to beat your score.
- The game ends when the board is full and there's no move left that merges tiles.
Strategy: the corner trick
The most effective technique for beginners is to pick a corner (for example, the bottom-right) and always keep your highest-value tile there. To do this, move in only two main directions (for example, down and right) and use the others as little as possible. This way you build a "staircase" of decreasing values that merge in a chain.
The most common mistake is moving upward unnecessarily: that shifts your big tile away from the corner and scrambles the whole structure. Think through each move before making it and avoid swiping on autopilot out of impatience.
Quick tips to score more
- Always work along the same base row or column so you don't break the staircase.
- Chain your merges: when you line up several equal tiles, a single move combines them all.
- Don't fill the board with scattered small tiles; keep the empty spaces on the side opposite your corner.
- If you get stuck, take a breath and look for the move that disrupts things the least, even if it merges nothing.
2048 is perfect for training planning and forward thinking, just like Sudoku. With a bit of practice you'll go from getting stuck at 256 to breezing past 2048.

2048 has its own global ranking: your best score is saved. Go to Ranking, the 🕹️ 1 Player tab, choose "2048" from the dropdown, and compare your score with other players, synced to your account.
