✊ How to play Rock, Paper, Scissors (and win more)

Rock, Paper, Scissors looks like the ultimate game of chance: three options, a one-in-three tie each round. And yet, against a human opponent (or an AI that mimics human patterns) there are tricks that tip the balance in your favor.

What is Rock, Paper, Scissors?

It's a simultaneous-choice game between two players. Each one picks rock, paper, or scissors at the same time. Rock beats scissors, scissors beats paper, and paper beats rock. If you both pick the same, it's a tie.

How to play

1. Choose one of the three options: ✊ rock, ✋ paper, or ✌ scissors.
2. Your opponent (the computer) chooses at the same time, without seeing your move.
3. Both hands are revealed and the rule is applied: rock > scissors > paper > rock.
4. Whoever has the winning move takes the round; if you match, it's a tie and you go again.

The strategy: reading patterns

Against a perfectly random opponent there's no winning strategy in the long run: all three options are equally good. The trick is that neither people nor many simple algorithms are truly random: they tend to repeat the move that won them the previous round, and to switch after losing. If you spot that pattern, you can get ahead of it.

Another fun fact from human tournaments: rock tends to be the most-picked option in the first round, because it unconsciously conveys a sense of strength. Choosing paper on the first throw wins more rounds than pure statistics would suggest.

Quick tips

• Watch whether your opponent repeats their move after winning: if so, pick whatever beats that move.
• If your opponent just lost, they're more likely to switch: rule out their last move.
• Don't fall into a fixed pattern yourself (rock-paper-scissors on a loop); an attentive opponent will spot it right away.

Play online with 2 players

You can play Rock, Paper, Scissors against another person in several ways: press "🌐 Online" and create a room to share a 4-letter code with whoever you want to challenge, use "🔍 Find opponent" to have the system instantly match you with another available player, or add a friend by their username from the 👥 Friends panel (while signed in) and press "Challenge" next to their name to invite them directly to a match. You can also both play on the same device by pressing "👥 2 players": Player 1 chooses without looking, then Player 2.

🏆 Wins ranking

All your online Rock, Paper, Scissors matches are recorded on your account: every win (and every loss) adds to your history. Go to Ranking, the 🎮 2 Players tab, choose "Rock, Paper, Scissors" from the dropdown, and check your position against other players, synced across all your devices. For your result to count you need a free account on MundoSudoku (just a username and password, no email required): you can play without one, but without signing in your score isn't saved to the ranking.
