🔵 How to play Dots and Boxes

Dots and Boxes is a timeless pencil-and-paper game. It takes a minute to learn, but hides a surprisingly deep strategy based on what are known as chains. Here are the rules and the key trick to winning more games.

What is Dots and Boxes?

It's played on a grid of dots. Taking turns, each player connects two adjacent dots with a line. The goal is to close boxes (squares): whoever completes the fourth side of a box claims it. Whoever has more boxes at the end wins.

How to play, step by step

1. On your turn, draw one line between two neighboring dots.
2. If that line completes a box, you claim it and play again.
3. You can chain several boxes in the same turn if you keep closing them.
4. The game ends when there are no more lines to draw. Whoever has closed more boxes wins.

Chain strategy

• Avoid being the one who draws the third side of a box: you're handing your opponent the close (and the turn).
• As the board fills up, chains of boxes form. Whoever is forced to open the first chain usually loses.
• The double-cross trick: leave two boxes for your opponent to force them to open the next chain for you. It's the key to advanced play.
• Early on, play safe lines that don't leave any box with three sides.

A pencil-and-paper classic

Dots and Boxes is perfect for two players and, despite its simplicity, it's a genuine strategy game that mathematicians have studied in depth. Here you can practice against the computer to master chains.

Play online with 2 players

You can play Dots and Boxes against another person in several ways: press "🌐 Online" and create a room to share a 4-letter code with whoever you want to challenge, use "🔍 Find opponent" to have the system instantly match you with another available player, or add a friend by their username from the 👥 Friends panel (while signed in) and press "Challenge" next to their name to invite them directly to a match. You can also both play on the same device by pressing "👥 2 players": taking turns, closing boxes and adding up points.

🏆 Wins ranking

All your online Dots and Boxes matches are recorded on your account: every win (and every loss) adds to your history. Go to Ranking, the 🎮 2 Players tab, choose "Dots and Boxes" from the dropdown, and check your position against other players, synced across all your devices. For your result to count you need a free account on MundoSudoku (just a username and password, no email required): you can play without one, but without signing in your score isn't saved to the ranking.
