🔴🟡 How to play Connect 4 (strategy to win)

By Miguel Arechaga

Connect 4 is a strategy game that's easy to learn and hard to master. Beneath its childlike appearance lie blocking tactics and double threats that make the difference between winning and losing. Here they are.

What is Connect 4?

It's played on a vertical board with 7 columns and 6 rows. Each player drops pieces of their color, and whoever lines up four in a row wins: horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. In our version you play the red pieces against the computer.

How to play

  1. Click a column: your piece drops to the lowest free spot.
  2. The computer then moves automatically.
  3. Whoever connects four pieces of the same color in a line wins.
  4. If the board fills up with no four in a row, it's a draw.

Strategy: control the center

The center column is the most valuable spot on the board, because it's part of the largest number of possible winning lines. Starting with the center and fighting for it gives you a real edge. From there, the game plays out on two fronts: building your own threats and watching your opponent's.

The decisive move is the double threat: placing a piece that opens up two possible four-in-a-rows at once. Your opponent can only block one, and you win with the other. Diagonals are perfect for this because they often go unnoticed.

Quick tips

With these ideas — center, blocking, and double threats — you'll start winning games that used to slip away.

Play online with 2 players

You can play Connect 4 against another person in several ways: press "🌐 Online" and create a room to share a 4-letter code with whoever you want to challenge, use "🔍 Find opponent" to have the system instantly match you with another available player, or add a friend by their username from the 👥 Friends panel (while signed in) and press "Challenge" next to their name to invite them directly to a match.

🏆 Wins ranking

All your online Connect 4 matches are recorded on your account: every win (and every loss) adds to your history. Go to Ranking, the 🎮 2 Players tab, choose "Connect 4" from the dropdown, and check your position against other players, synced across all your devices. For your result to count you need a free account on MundoSudoku (just a username and password, no email required): you can play without one, but without signing in your score isn't saved to the ranking.
