4x4 sudoku is the perfect gateway into the world of sudoku. With just four numbers and a small grid, it's easy to understand and a lot of fun, especially for kids and anyone who's never played before. Here are the rules and a few tips to solve it right away.
What is 4x4 sudoku?
It's a shrunk-down version of classic sudoku. Instead of a 9x9 grid, it's played on a 4x4 one divided into four 2x2 boxes. Only the numbers 1 to 4 are used, so it's much faster and simpler to solve.
Rules and how to play step by step
- Fill the grid with the numbers 1 to 4.
- A number can't repeat in the same row.
- A number can't repeat in the same column.
- A number can't repeat inside each 2x2 box.
- Tap an empty square and pick the missing number. Done!
Tips for kids (and beginners)
- Look for the row, column, or box that already has three numbers: the missing one can only go in one spot.
- Go number by number: check where the 1 can go, then the 2, and so on.
- If you're stuck, move to another area of the board and come back later; it almost always unblocks itself.
