🔤 How to play Hangman (and guess it first)

By Miguel Arechaga

Hangman is a word game that mixes vocabulary and intuition. Guessing the hidden word with only a few letters can seem like pure luck, but there's a strategy based on letter frequency that greatly improves your odds.

What is Hangman?

There's a secret word represented by a dash for each letter. You propose letters one at a time: if they're right, they appear in place; if they're wrong, you lose an attempt. The challenge is to complete the word before you run out of chances.

How to play

  1. You'll see a dash for each letter of the hidden word.
  2. Tap letters on the on-screen keyboard (or your physical one) to guess them.
  3. If the letter is in the word, it gets placed; if it isn't, you lose an attempt (you have 6).
  4. Use the Hint button if you get stuck: it reveals a letter.
  5. You win if you complete the word before running out of attempts.

The frequent-letters strategy

Not all letters are equally likely. Vowels like E, A, O, I show up in almost every word, so they're the best first bet. After that, try the most common consonants: R, S, T, N, L, D, C. Saving the rare ones (Q, X, Z, J) for last keeps you from wasting attempts.

Once you've placed a few letters, look at the pattern. Common endings and frequent letter pairs will give you clues to deduce the rest without taking unnecessary risks.

Quick tips

Besides being fun, Hangman builds your vocabulary and sharpens deduction. With the frequent-letters method, you'll win a lot more games.

🏆 Streak ranking

Hangman has its own global ranking: your longest streak of correctly guessed words in a row is saved. Go to Ranking, the 🕹️ 1 Player tab, choose "Hangman" from the dropdown, and compare your score with other players, synced to your account. For your result to count you need a free account on MundoSudoku (just a username and password, no email required): you can play without one, but without logging in your score won't be saved to the ranking.
