The history of sudoku: from Euler to Japanese newspapers

Almost everyone believes sudoku is an ancient Japanese invention. The truth is far more curious: the world's most famous puzzle has roots in 18th-century Switzerland, an American father, a Japanese christening, and a worldwide explosion that started in Australia. This is the surprising journey sudoku took to reach your screen.

The mathematical ancestor: Euler's Latin squares

The seed of sudoku lies in the work of Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler, who in the 18th century studied so-called "Latin squares": grids in which each symbol appears exactly once per row and column. They weren't a game but a mathematical object of study, and they were missing the star ingredient of modern sudoku: the 3x3 block constraint. Still, the basic idea of filling a grid without repeating symbols was already there.

The real inventor: Howard Garns

Sudoku as we know it was born in 1979, and not in Asia but in the United States. A retired architect named Howard Garns designed the puzzle for Dell Magazines, where it was published under the name "Number Place". Garns added the key ingredient that made it special: the nine 3x3 blocks. Curiously, he died in 1989 without ever seeing the worldwide phenomenon his creation would become.

The Japanese christening

In 1984, Japanese publisher Nikoli imported the puzzle and published it under a long name that ended up shortened to sudoku, from "sūji wa dokushin ni kagiru" ("the numbers must be single", or more loosely, "each number, unique"). It was a perfect fit in Japan: crossword puzzles work poorly with Japanese writing, so a number-based puzzle found an enthusiastic audience. Nikoli refined the rules, requiring symmetrical clues and a unique solution, giving it the elegant shape it has today.

The worldwide explosion from Australia

The leap to global fame came thanks to Wayne Gould, a retired New Zealand judge who discovered sudoku in a Tokyo bookstore and got hooked. He spent years programming a computer to generate sudokus automatically and, in 2004, convinced the British newspaper The Times to publish them. The success was immediate and explosive: within months, newspapers around the world had added a daily sudoku section, and from there it jumped to books, magazines, phones, and eventually to websites like this one.

From paper to screen

What started as a mathematical curiosity and passed through the pages of newspapers now lives mostly in the digital world. Computer generators can create endless sudokus with calibrated difficulty and a guaranteed unique solution, something unthinkable when puzzles had to be designed by hand. Why "sudoku" is spelled that way (and other curiosities about the name)

The full Japanese name, sūji wa dokushin ni kagiru, is so long that an abbreviation was inevitable. That's how sudoku came about. Interestingly, the "Sudoku" trademark was registered by Nikoli in Japan, so other Japanese publishers had to keep using "Number Place", the original American name. In other words, in its adoptive country the puzzle has two names depending on who publishes it, while the rest of the world embraced precisely the shortened Japanese version. A small trademark tangle that explains why the same puzzle travels under different labels.

How many different sudokus exist?

It might seem like sudokus would eventually run out, but the math says otherwise. In 2005, researchers Bertram Felgenhauer and Frazer Jarvis calculated the number of complete, valid sudoku grids: more than 6.67 sextillion combinations (specifically, 6,670,903,752,021,072,936,960). Even after discarding grids that are simply rotations or reflections of another, the number of "essentially different" sudokus is still close to 5.5 billion. In practical terms: even if you played thousands of games a day for your entire life, you would never repeat a board. That's why automatic generators can offer literally endless fresh puzzles.

The magic number of clues

Another question that fascinates enthusiasts is what the minimum number of clues is for a sudoku to still have a unique solution. For years it was a mystery, until in 2012 a team of Irish researchers proved, with an enormous amount of computer calculation, that the minimum is 17: valid sudokus exist with 17 clues, but none with 16 has a unique solution. It's a lovely fact that blends a tabletop game with serious mathematical research, and further proof that there's much more depth behind those nine rows than meets the eye.

A puzzle with more than two centuries behind it
